Learn Everything You Need to Know About Senior Living Apartments

The Cost of Senior Housing: What Should You Expect to Pay Monthly?

Retirement community rents can vary widely depending on a number of criteria, including the community’s location, the size of available apartments (studio vs. two-bedroom), and more.

Generally speaking, there are three distinct price points:

• Low-income housing: These complexes are designed for retirees on a tight budget, but what really constitutes a low income in the senior population? There are options for seniors with annual salaries of $20,000 to $30,000 or less, though this varies by location and by type of housing program. Even while there are cheap housing options for seniors with earnings between $38 and $40,000 per year, they may still require some form of financial aid to manage escalating healthcare expenditures.

• In general, market-rate apartments are less expensive than those marketed to a wide range of ages, making them a great option for retirees who are not on a fixed income but who still value living in a community with people of a similar age.

• High-end senior housing, often known as “luxury” or “senior” housing, features larger units in enviable areas, in addition to a host of other perks.

Managing the Cost of Retirement Housing

There are a number of options for financing retirement communities. In the case of low-income seniors, for instance, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) helps subsidize specific senior housing complexes, making those complexes more accessible at reduced rents or even free of charge.

Private funds, the sale of real estate, a reverse mortgage, funds from a 401(k), IRA, or stocks, bridge loans, annuities, and tax deductions are just some of the other ways that seniors might assist cover the expense of an apartment.

Costs increase in proportion to the level of assistance required, so it’s important to keep in mind that seniors’ apartments are a good starting point for persons of varying financial means because they are designed for self-sufficient seniors who require minimal assistance.
